Why Leaders Come Home Empty (and Netflix Won't Fix It)

A palm sander in my garage is what started bringing me back to my family.

Last issue, I told you about the season my family got my scraps. I was home for dinner most nights, physically present but mentally absent, until refinishing furniture, a few ski days, and some rounds of golf with friends started refilling an empty emotional tank. Most people think fun is a reward you get once the tank is full, but fun is actually what fills it.

I asked you to pick one fun activity or hobby, block a specific date in the next two weeks, and send the text if it involves another person. If it's on the calendar, I'd love to know what you picked.

If it isn't, I get it. Maybe you opened the calendar and heard "this doesn't help the bottom line" or "I don't have time." Underneath that voice is usually a question most of us never say out loud: am I worth time spent on something that produces nothing? That's a reasonable question for someone who's been rewarded his whole life for output.

In this week's episode of the RHYTHMS OF REST Leadership Podcast, I tell the full story: what happened in the garage, the night my wife told me she needed help, and why I'm getting back into hunting for the first time in over thirty years. You can listen on your favorite platform or watch on YouTube at kentmurawski.com.

Think of the last time you lost track of time doing something you loved. That guy is still in there, and your family is worth a husband and father with something left.
